Got my first boat when I was 5 years old. It was a 12' Punt (like a barge) with a 5hp Johnson.Graduated to a 16' Amesbury Dory; same motor. Next was a 14' Aqualine aluminium boat with a 10hp Scott-Atwater. Replaced the Scott with a Mercury Super 10 Hurricane (KG7). Found an Aqualine 2 years ago. Next was The Custom Craft Manta Ray Racer. Power Merc. Mk78 short shaft. Burnt in 1960. Next was Hydrodine 17' with the shock/spring front seat. Power 2 Merc. 800s direct reverse. Sunk in a water ski marathon. Bottom split. Next was a Hydrodine 18' tournment ski boat. Initital power 2 Merc. 1000s, then 2 Merc 1250s, we tried 3 1250s for marathon racing. Balance was way off. Went to a 16' Power Cat with 2 Merc 1250s. Plenty of speed but the cats had a long way to go with bottom design. We became a Checkmate dealer for a few years. I had a bunch of them. At that time they were only building outboard hulls.13, 14, 16 and 18 footers. The 16 and 18' boats were fun. That is where I learned to take a deep "V" to the edge. That was driving or so I thought until I got into the Skaters. The cat design had come a long way and getting into the 3 digit speeds was fun and reasonably safe. Now I have a 24' 1979 Pantera with a big block 330TRS drive, completely restored. Lots of fun and all I need for speed at my age. I still would love to find a 14' Custom Craft Manta Ray Racer. That would be a very cool ride for my grand children.
