About Me

I recently purchased a 1954 Custom Craft wood Model PB-29-D 14'Seagoing Runabout with a 1959 Mercury Kiekhaefer Mark 35A manual start. I was lucky in that I purchased it from the original builders daughter. She shared her memories and original snapshots of her dad the day the crated boat arrived by freight, pictures in the construction process, a dated photo showing the boat and trailer going to the lake behind their 1956 ford without an engine just to check for leaks. Other pictures of the family in the boat on Keuka lake with a barrowed engine. He purchased the present 35 hp. Merc outboard from the Wayne Trading Post in 1959. The boat was used for a couple years than he desided to take up a new hobby getting his pilots license. He cleaned the carbs, squirter some oil in the cylinders on the motor and placed the boat and motor in the family garage where it remained covered from about 1962 till June 2016. I also received some of the items that appear in the photos. Water skis, boat ladder, 2 vintage fishing poles, a homemade ski rope made of hemp and a homemade anchor made from a baking soda can filled with cement and two cross bars. The original Mercury Kiekhaefer fuel tank and hose that appears almost new as does the motor. The only damage was minor varnish damage on the deck from being stored in the hot garage for 55 years. My problem is getting the paperwork in order dut to the fact that the boat was never licensed or registered and has no Hull ID. # because in 1954 kit boats wern't assigned such numbers by the factory and my state is giving me greif with trying to prove ownership even though I have paperwork from the estate attorney. Will submit pictures as soon as I figure out this site!

Hi Danny,

Thanks for reaching out, would love to see some photos of your boat if you can get them on the site. Would be very interested in seeing how similar they are. My boat was from the original owner's wife, but didn't include any blue-prints, nor any specific model information. I did manage to get all the original hardware and the original Evinrude outboard. Looking forward to comparing

Oh. Forgot to mention I was also given a folder containg the original, company brochures, the blue prints, bill of materials, hardware options, recommendations for paint, etc.
I'm looking forward to getting it going but don't want to put too much money or effort into it until the paperwork is in order. The seller has been awsome... now if I can just get my state DNR to loosen up a bit. Wish me luck thanks!
